Stormwater Drainage: Promoting Proper Flow and Prolonging Pit Service

Posted on: 22 November 2017

Stormwater pits and channels are essential for promoting the flow of water from your residential property. If these elements are not functioning as expected, your home is likely to experience flooding problems in the future. In simple terms, trenches are designed to collect the water while the stormwater pit holds the water, ensuring that drainage occurs at an efficient rate. If there is an obstacle preventing the performance of these features, you might have to deal with pooling of water. Here are some guidelines to help you avert stormwater drainage problems.

Clear the Yard

The most common problem which compromises stormwater drainage in the home is debris. In most cases, the drainage channels and the stormwater pits will stop functioning as expected because of the accumulated waste around and in the features. Over time, the water flow will slow down, and flooding will occur in your home. If you would like to avoid this unfortunate occurrence, you should be diligent in the maintenance of your yard. Ideally, you should rake the landscape and sweep the pavements and driveways before the rainy season begins. Eliminating the waste will promote better drainage and reduce the pressure exerted on your pits.

Install Protective Devices

Stormwater pits are still vulnerable to blockages even if you perform yard maintenance, although the risk will be lower. In simple terms, some leaves, grass clippings and twigs will escape your attention during your landscaping projects. If these materials are allowed to flow into the stormwater pits, the elements will experience blockages. Therefore, you should install some protective devices over your stormwater features. Stormwater pit traps will collect large pieces of debris in their basket-like structure. Sediment traps are ideal for capturing sediments which escape the pits. You can also use filter socks to remove contaminants from the runoff. Additionally, if you have trench channel in your home, you should ensure that there is a grate placed over it.

Inspect the Pit and Channels

Finally, you should perform an inspection of your stormwater drainage elements on a regular basis. Pits and channels are long-lasting and can withstand adverse conditions. However, they are often exposed to high pressure and stress due to the flow of stormwater. Therefore, you should check for cracks, crumbling and other signs of wear on the units. If the damage is localised, you can purchase commercial patching products. However, if the degradation of the pits or channels is extensive, you should consider hiring a concrete contractor for the replacement of the features.

Laying Fresh Concrete

If you need to lay some fresh concrete, you are in the right place. Laying fresh concrete can be a real challenge. Not only do you need to make sure it pours into the right place, you also need to work quickly to smooth it over before it sets and becomes solid. When I decided to concrete my drive, I was really worried that I would mess it up. Thankfully, I had the support of my brother Victor who is a concrete expert. He demonstrated exactly what I needed to do and I am really pleased with the results. I hope this blog helps you with your concreting project.
